What is the Motorcycle Rider Course?
The motorcycle rider course, known as the Basic
Rider Course (BRC), is a complete, hands-on course of instruction
for motorcycle street riders of all ages. The course assumes no
prior knowledge of motorcycling.
What will I Iearn?
This 15-hour course begins in the classroom
on Friday evening with an overview of the course, a review of
the types of motorcycles, and instruction in motorcycle control
and protective gear. The riding portion of the program begins
on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. This portion of the program covers
these riding skills:
• Straight-line riding
• Turning, shifting and braking
• Street riding strategies
• Hazard avoidance
• Advanced turning
• Maximum braking
• Handling special riding situations
Can I use my own equipment?
All students will be supplied with a training motorcycle, a DOT-
approved 3/4 helmet and classroom training materials. Students
are encouraged to use their own DOT-approved 3/4 or full-faced
helmet if they have one. All students must use the motorcycles
provided.
What type of motorcycles are used
in the BRC training program?
The bikes used in the BRC program are generally 125cc or 250cc
street style motorcycles. (See photos below) They weigh approximately
200-250 lbs and seat heights range from 24 to 27 inches (depending
on the model selected). Rider coaches will match riders to the
size bike that best fits their needs.

What do I need to bring?
You must wear protective gear. This includes the following:
• Eye protection
• Sturdy over-the-ankle footwear (not cloth or canvas)
• Long sleeve shirt or jacket
• Long, non-flair denim pants or equally durable material
• Full fingered gloves, preferably leather
If I take this class, do I have
to take the DMV licensing exam?
Successful completion of this course exempts
the student from the riding portion of Virginia's DMV license
test and may entitle the student to a reduced rate on motorcycle
insurance.
Who is eligible for the Basic
Rider Course?
Students must be at least 15-1/2 years of age and have successfully
completed the classroom portion of a basic driver education course.
Other enrollment requirements include:
• Parental permission, (if under age 18)
• Ability to balance on two wheels as in riding a bicycle
• Completion of a risk/ liability waiver (provided at the
first session)
When are the classes offered?
Classes meet at the following times:
• Friday nights from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
• Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
• Sunday 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Important Information!
Student must attend all sessions and students must be on time.
No-shows and late arrivals will forfeit their place in class and
all tuition.

Classes are filled on a first come, first serve basis. Cancellations
will be filled with the next available student.

What is ERC?
The Experienced Rider Course (ERC) is for riders
with about 4000 miles of riding experience who wish to review
skills and practice in a safe, controlled environment.
Who Should
Take the ERC?
You should have at least 4,000 miles of riding
experience before attempting to take the ERC. If you have never
taken a training class then perhaps you would be better served
to first take the novice class.
When are
ERC Classes Offered?
Classes are offered on specific Sundays from
8:00 am to 5:30 pm with time for lunch and breaks included. Attendance
at all sessions is mandatory.

What
should I bring to an ERC Class?
In addition to the clothing and
supplies required for the BRC, you must bring the following
items:
A street legal motorcycle that will pass a
Motorcycle Safety Foundation T-CLOCK Saftey Inspection.
Proof of registration
of the motorcycle you are riding to the class.
Proof of insurance for
the motorcycle you are riding to class.
Proof of a motorcycle
endorsement on a current valid driver's license.
