Why should I take a noncredit course?
Noncredit courses are specifically designed to meet the needs
of working adults or those who seek specific educational goals.
Classes are short and usually offered days, evenings and weekends.
Noncredit students are not required to apply for admission to
the college or sit for the placement exam. In most cases, regular
attendance and a demonstration of competence in the skills taught
will result in a satisfactory grade.
Do I need to apply for admission to the college?
Students who desire to take noncredit courses
offered through the Center for Workforce and Community Education
do not need to apply for admission to the College. A short,
one-page registration or a quick phone call is all it takes to
register for a non-credit class. Payment is required at
the time of registration.
What is the difference between a credit course
and a noncredit course?
Credit courses are generally taken as part of a
degree program, Noncredit courses are offered to provide a purposeful
and systematic process of acquiring and recording lifetime learning
for individuals who are not enrolled in a formally structured
curriculum. Noncredit courses provide CEUs. Usually
no homework is assigned and students are not tested.
What is a Continuing Education Unit (CEU)?
The CEU is a nationally recognized standard for recording participation
in noncredit continuing education. One CEU is defined as ten contact
hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience
under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified
instruction.
How old do I have to
be to take a noncredit course?
Courses are intended for adults. However, individuals between
the ages of 16 and 18 may enroll in noncredit classes provided
that both the responsible adult and the minor student sign a letter
indicating understanding and acknowledgement of the following:
• The student will be participating in a class intended
for adults
• The student is expected to behave as a responsible adult.
The college reserves the right to deny enrollment to students
younger than 18 in courses the College deems potentially hazardous,
unsafe, or otherwise inappropriate for minors.
