USING DISCUSSION BOARDS

Many instructors utilize the Discussion Board feature in their courses. The Discussion Board is a very popular and easy means of communication. The information below provides instructions for accessing, posting, and responding to a discussion thread, as well as discussion thread options.

To use the Discussion Board in a course, click Communication on the course menu, and then click on the Discussion Board icon as pictured below. Click the forum name to enter the discussion.
 
 
Add Forum
Not all courses will have the feature to add new discussion forums available; this is an option left to the discretion of the instructor. If available, the process for creating a new forum is simple. To create a new discussion forum, click the Add Forum button. Enter a subject name, type your message in the text box provided and then click the Submit button.
 
Post Message Thread
To post a new message thread with in a forum, click the Add New Thread button. Enter a thread name, type your message in the text box provided and then click the Submit button. Hint: For longer threads, you may want to type your message in a word processing application first (i.e. Microsoft Word), spell check, and then copy and paste it in the text box. For more information, click Post Message Thread.
 
Reply To Message Thread
To reply to a message thread, click on the button. Type your message in the text box, and then click the Submit button. For more information, click Reply to Message Thread.
 
Discussion Thread Options
Different options are available to be used to manage message threads.
  • To display your menu options, click either the Show Options button or the small red triangle icon.
  • The menu option bar:
  • To apply a thread option, click the check box next to the discussion thread message, then click an option from the option menu.
  • To print out discussion board threads:
    • Place a check mark next to the thread to be printed, and then click the Collect option button. Print using the browser Print function.
    • To print the whole discussion forum, use the Select All button, then click the Collect option button. All the threads selected will appear in a continuous list. Print using the browser Print function.
